Ecommerce is fast becoming one of the most popular forms of shopping in India, fueled by an increase in customer acquisition over the past 12 months due to the Covid-19 epidemic, a new study shows.

Despite the opening of local markets, department stores, and supermarkets over the past few months, the findings of the LocalCircles community survey show that consumers who used e-commerce services last year continue to use them.

Nearly half of all respondents responded that e-commerce websites and apps have become their way of shopping in the last 12 months. Another 18% said they prefer home delivery to local retailers.

Security, competitive prices, and ease of return are counted as the top reasons why consumers rely on e-commerce services than ever before, a study found 130,000 responses from more than 42,000 different consumers located in 358 regions of India. Customers have started paying more for high-end items, and many more have turned to buy from priced products rather than premiums.

Among the most popular categories of consumers who shop online are the essentials and food — 69% of respondents said they buy this online. An estimated 54% said they bought online moderate items such as clothing, furniture, and other electrical appliances in the last 12 months, and 32% responded that they bought more expensive items such as gadgets, white goods, and furniture.

“As customer consumption patterns and habits evolved, over the last year, sellers have seen high demand in categories such as groceries, work from home, and online schooling enablers like laptops, smart devices, and headphones. We also saw significant demand for personal grooming products, wellness products, masks and sanitizers, and fitness products on Amazon” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Markets also reported high growth in such categories over the past year. The survey found that 33% of respondents bought everything they needed for e-commerce, while another 29% said more than 75% of their spending was on social media last year.

So, this all about the e-commerce sector which is having a great impact on the market during the pandemic as well.
